Question 1

What is the best alternative to Checkov for Terraform security?

Accepted Answer

For AI-powered security with contextual explanations plus cost, drift, and guardrails in one tool, Terracotta AI. For the broadest deterministic rule coverage across 14+ frameworks, Checkov remains the leader. For security integrated into a CI/CD platform, Spacelift or Terraform Cloud with Run Tasks. Many teams use Checkov for broad coverage and add Terracotta for AI-powered context and additional checks.

Question 2

Is Checkov really free?

Accepted Answer

The Checkov CLI is completely free and open-source (Apache 2.0) with all 1,000+ rules included. However, centralized dashboard, drift detection, and team governance features require upgrading to Prisma Cloud Code Security, which starts at approximately $18,000/year per 100 credits.
